Interview: fromdiamwithlove

We recently talked to Diam, the traveler behind the blog fromdiamwithlove. Here’s a little bit about her: Diam originally comes from Ohio but now lives in Florida. She is a travel enthusiast, a foodie, a graduate student and a volunteer all at the same time. Impressive? We think so.

Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

A: I have a few fun facts. I’m a travel planner. I’m a vegetarian. I don’t like cold weather. And I never travel without my Orlando City soccer hat

Q: As a graduate student, how do you make time to travel?

A: The great thing about being a student is that we get our syllabi a few weeks before the semester starts. So that lets me know what’s due and when it’s due. I take advantage of this by doing all of my homework in advance. That way, if I want to travel and assignment is due that week then I’ll already have it done and out of the way.

I also take advantage of holiday breaks, long weekends and days I don’t have class. I schedule my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I can travel almost every Friday to Monday, and sometimes even longer than that if it’s Thanksgiving break or Easter break.

Q: What drove you to start traveling and writing a travel blog?

A: I grew up traveling. As a child we would go on vacation probably 8 to 10 times per year. Sometimes we were traveling every month and I like that. It’s who I am. So as I got older I just continued to travel even more. So I’ve been traveling for about 20 years, but I didn’t start blogging until last year. I had never thought about blogging before. One of my friends said “You’re always traveling. You should start a travel blog with reviews, and things to do and help out other travelers.” I thought it was a fun idea so I started blogging and I’m so glad I did.

Q: What’s your favorite destination?

A: This is a tough one because every place I visit has something unique about it that stands out and makes it my favorite. I loved Belize, it was beautiful, but I think it’s because I got over my fear of fish and went snorkeling while there. I loved Barbados because I learned to surf there, which gave me more courage to snorkel. But I also loved Greece. I was there for about 3 weeks and I did things I never imagined like cliff diving off nearly 30-foot cliffs. It was awesome. Plus, the Mediterranean diet is amazing, especially since I’m a vegetarian. I’m going to Paris in a few days so I’m sure that’ll be my new favorite.

Q: You’ve been to 31 states in the U.S. Which one do you like best?

A: My favorite state is Florida. As a child one of the first vacations I remember taking was to Florida (Disney World, Universal Orlando, and then a cruise to the Bahamas) I knew from the second I arrived in Florida I never wanted to leave. Which is why I moved here from Ohio a few weeks after finishing college. So I’d have to say Florida is my favorite state. But I also love California. As I mentioned, I’m from Ohio and I’m not a fan of cold weather, so I love living in Florida with our endless summer weather. I just got back from Hawaii 2 weeks ago, and while it was beautiful and the fruit was delicious I still would say Florida is my favorite state.

Q: Any advice for travelers?

A: Just go. Book the trip, book the flight, stay at Airbnb if you want to save money, just go. For my budget travelers, a good bit of advice is to choose your next destination based on sales/prices. If you see there’s a sale to Jamaica this weekend, then go to Jamaica this weekend instead of paying twice as much to go to Tanzania.
