Touchdown: Santa Fe

Unspoiled mountains and vast deserts. Ancient native culture with Spanish and modern touches. Adobe houses, red and gold in the glow of a setting sun. Art galleries sprawling the streets. And food, so much good food.

Travel + Leisure named Santa Fe its 2017 Reader’s Choice Destination of the Year, with a whopping 65% of votes. Intrigued with the fascinating descriptions on the magazine, we decided to check it out as a potential destination for the holidays. With its complex history, thriving art scene, picturesque settings and delicious-looking food, it wasn’t hard to get us hooked.

We took a 20-hour train ride to Santa Fe from Los Angeles – an adventure itself even before reaching our destination. Our school and work didn’t permit a lot of time, but in less than a week we have made friends with unlikely people, saw a potter creating a beautiful vase in person, ate our weight in salsa, tried out the Frito pie we saw in Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, looked at the winter constellations in the company of a capricious black cat…and more.

Our experience at Santa Fe was nothing less than magical and we’re excited to share them with you over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
